The Picture Word Inductive Model (PWIM) is a inductive process in which students seek patterns and use them to identify their broader meanings. In PWIM an enlarged photo is placed in the classroom, students and the teacher together label objects in the picture. Students use the words in sentences, which are then categorized. The sentences are combined into paragraphs. Finally a title is chosen.
This 1 day workshop will focus on each of the 10 steps/5 phases, in detail and provide examples through videos and activities.
This research based strategy is transferable to any subject area from K-12, and promotes vocabulary acquisition and understanding. It is particularly helpful for ESL students and all visual learners. Larry Ferlazzo explains “PWIM uses an inductive process (in which students seek patterns and use them to identify their broader meanings and significance), as opposed to a deductive process (where meanings or rules are given, and students have to then apply them).”
Lynn Prosko is a retired teacher who spent 43 years in classrooms in Saskatchewan teaching pre-school to grade 8 students with a major time spent in K-2. She was a lead instructional teacher for PWIM for the Horizon School Division in Saskatchewan.
