Learning Opportunities

How can boys be enticed to engage in reading endeavors? The majority of teachers that boys engage with in school are women and they are choosing or recommending the literature that the boys will read. As well, it is often mothers who choose the reading materials for their homes. A look at some research will lead us in a better direction for selecting and offering literature that entices the boys to become engaged with more reading. Of course, the activities chosen to explore the literature will also be important to keeping the boys engaged. You will leave this workshop understanding why boys don’t seem to want to read, with reading material suggestions and activities to keep them engaged in literacy.
