BOX CARS AND ONE-EYED JACKS: PRIMARY MATH AND LITERACY GAMES WORKSHOP

Are you looking for engaging and effective ways to help your primary students gain confidence and competence with key math concepts?  Come prepared to play math games that incorporate the use of cards, dice, multi-sided dice, number lines new math shakers, and other easily found manipulatives.  Jane has not been to the SW area in years and will bring all new games, activities and resources.

Concepts covered include:

counting, comparing numbers, operations,  including strategies for developing fact fluency with understanding, number and operations in base ten, understanding place value concepts to 100, 1000, representing and interpreting data. 

Throughout the workshop participants will have the opportunity to play each game, learn how to differentiate the activities to meet the needs of all learners and work in small groups, how to develop math journals and math talk extensions, how to use the games for assessment pieces.

Student samples, gameboards, ideas for whole/small group instruction will be provided. Interspersed throughout will be practical ideas for classroom organization and management to ensure effective implementation of games as a teaching strategy.  Ideas for developing weekly lesson plans will be shared.

For the literacy section participants will have the opportunity to playliteracy games that incorporate the use of letter tiles, literacy dice, word decks and other easily found manipulatives. Games and strategies are easy to differentiate and are especially effective for guided literacy stations, small or whole group instruction and complement all literacy programs.  Concepts covered include:  learning the alphabet and its' sounds, word patterns and families, cloze activities, vocabulary development and more. Journal writing and response activities, classroom management strategies will be shared throughout.

An extensive handout will be provided for both the math and literacy sections.

Resources will be available for purchase on site.
