The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) Model is designed to help teachers plan and deliver lessons that allow English as an additional language learners to simultaneously acquire academic knowledge as they develop language proficiency. SIOP is not a program, but rather a framework. Join Bev Smith for this introductory series to the SIOP framework and its 8 components to support EAL students in accessing the curriculum in a comprehensible way.
This will be a 4 part series with each session building upon the previous one. There will be a blend between theory and interaction throughout each session. The topics for each day will be:
Session 1 - The principles of Second Language Acquisition Theory, an overview of SIOP, Lesson Preparation Feature with a focus on writing content and language objectives
Session 2 - Building Background and Comprehensible Input features
Session 3 - Strategies and Interactions features
Session 4 - Practice and Application, Lesson Delivery, Review and Assessment features, as well as a discussion of how to get started
