Robin Bright advocates implementing a strong writing program in the primary classroom. In Write from the Start, she introduces writers workshop – a highly effective approach to teaching writing to young people. Writers workshop encourages young students to write for real purposes, helps them develop fluency and independence in writing, and engages the students in creating text.

Write from the Start offers educators invaluable instruction for teaching writing, including:

  • Strategies for organizing, developing and maintaining writers workshop in the primary classroom
  • How to develop the art of Storytelling
  • Introducing different forms of writing
  • Establishing routines such as conferencing, author’s circle, editing table and more
  • Step-by-step writing activities
  • Assessment and evaluation
  • Tips on how to encourage parents to be part of their child’s writing instruction
  • Many practical reproducible masters

Robin asked over 100 teachers the following questions: “What frustrates you about writing instruction?” She used the responses from these questions, along with the findings of the most effective research, to compile dozens of easy-to-use writing activities.

In this session, Robin will share strategies for involving young children in the writing process.

Robin Bright, PhD, award-winning author, was an elementary school teacher for 10 years. She is now a Professor of Education at the University of Lethbridge, Alberta. She teaches courses in the area of language arts, reading, writing and gender studies. Robin is the author of two professional books on reading and writing instruction and has published numerous articles on these topics.
