The theme of this year’s conference is Grab the Mic: The Art of Communicating is the Language of Leadership. Effectively harness both internal and external communication related to current and emerging issues from finances to new curriculum.  Our learning will strengthen organizational cohesion and enhance public confidence in education.

Morning and Afternoon Keynote: Therese Mickelson,

  • Bachelor of Journalism (Honours) Carleton University, Ottawa, Ontario
  • Accredited Business Communicator International Association of Business Communicators (IABC)

Therese Mickelson is an award-winning, internationally accredited senior communicator who has managed a wide range of media, public relations, marketing and strategic communication initiatives in the public and private sectors over the course of more than 25 years. She has a thorough understanding of local government, works extensively with local and regional governments and their communities, and is an experienced trainer and facilitator. Therese is also an instructor at the Justice Institute of British Columbia. References are available on request.

9:00-12:00 Morning Keynote: Strategic Communication 101
This presentation will cover the fundamentals of strategic communication, including the key components of a strategic communication plan and the steps you need to follow to reach audiences more effectively with messages that support your goals.

The presentation will highlight:

  • Opportunities and challenges that impact communication
  • Audience assessment
  • Key messages tips
  • Standby responses and bridging phrases to deal with issues
  • Communication tools and tactics – benefits and pitfalls

1:00-3:15pm Afternoon Keynote: Communication Workshop Cont'd
Applying the fundamentals covered in the morning, this workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to work in groups focused on a scenario that applies to their area or organization. The session will include a Communications Needs Assessment and Key Message Guide and assigned tasks that will enable each group to develop a preliminary communications strategy for their scenario.

The workshop tasks will include exercises to:

  • Complete situation analysis: impacts and issues assessment
  • Identify objectives
  • Complete audience and tactics assessment
  • Develop key messages and standby responses
